Telangana Expands Cotton Acreage Ahead of New Harvest Season
Cotton cultivation in Telangana has expanded this kharif season despite earlier concerns that the El Niño weather pattern and uneven rainfall could discourage farmers from planting the crop. The State has recorded an increase of nearly 3 lakh acres, or about 1.21 lakh hectares, over expectations.
With the harvest season approaching, the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) is preparing its designated procurement centres to handle the expected arrivals. The Telangana government has directed the agency to make procurement arrangements more efficient and assured full cooperation to avoid delays for farmers.
Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao has also urged cotton ginners and millers to restart operations within the next few weeks. Early opening of processing units is expected to create sufficient capacity to absorb the crop as arrivals increase.
Overall kharif sowing in Telangana has reached around 47.71 lakh acres, equivalent to 19.31 lakh hectares, bringing the cultivated area close to the State’s normal seasonal target. This comes despite concerns over delayed and irregular rains during parts of the season.
Farmers have also reported difficulties with the government-operated booking system for procurement slots. The shift from mandal-level allocation to district-level scheduling has reportedly created confusion and made it harder for some growers to secure convenient slots.
At the same time, relatively lower rainfall in certain areas has had an unexpected advantage, reducing weed growth and easing some field-management challenges.
To address procurement-related concerns, the State government has sought improvements to the Kisan Kapas app, including greater flexibility and the incorporation of practical suggestions from farmers.
