Kerala Cuts Sabari Coconut Oil Price to ₹229 Ahead of Festival
The Kerala State Civil Supplies Corporation (Supplyco) has announced a cut in the price of its Sabari subsidised coconut oil as part of its preparations for the upcoming Onam season. The one-litre combination pack will now be available for ₹229, down from the earlier price of ₹249 at Supplyco outlets.
The revised rate includes a 500-ml subsidised component, which has become cheaper at ₹110 compared with ₹140 previously. Customers seeking the subsidised quantity must present a valid ration card.
The move comes at a time when coconut oil prices in Kerala remain considerably higher in the open market. Retail rates are currently around ₹300 per litre, while wholesale prices are close to ₹280. The lower Supplyco price could therefore provide some relief to consumers and encourage greater purchases through government outlets during the festival period.
Market conditions are also expected to remain relatively stable after Onam, as better copra availability is likely to support supplies. A strong coconut harvest in Kerala has improved availability, although reports of stockpiling by traders from outside the State had contributed to recent price pressures.
The government’s intervention may benefit households but could create challenges for local coconut oil manufacturers that bought copra when prices were higher. Their production costs could make it difficult to match Supplyco’s reduced retail rate.
There are also concerns that unusually low market prices could encourage the circulation of inferior or adulterated coconut oil. Strengthening checks on such products will be important to protect consumers while maintaining fair competition in the market.
