India steps up efforts to raise oilseed and pulse production
The government is stepping up measures to increase the production of oilseeds and pulses and reduce India’s dependence on imports.
The National Mission on Edible Oils-Oilseeds (NMEO-OS), approved in October 2024, aims to raise primary oilseed production from 39 million tonnes in 2022-23 to 69.7 million tonnes by 2030-31. The Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses, launched in October 2025, has set a target of increasing pulse production from 242 lakh tonnes to 350 lakh tonnes by 2030-31.
The oilseed mission is being implemented through more than 600 value-chain clusters across the country. These are managed by Farmer Producer Organisations, cooperatives and other agencies. Farmers receive free quality seeds of improved high-yielding varieties along with training in better farming practices. The programme also supports oil mills and other post-harvest facilities to improve oil recovery.
Field demonstrations are being conducted to encourage farmers to adopt improved varieties and modern cultivation methods. The government is also supporting breeder seed purchases, new seed hubs and specialised storage facilities to improve the availability of certified seeds. Oilseeds are also being procured at Minimum Support Price under PM-AASHA.
During 2025-26, free seed distribution covered 13.52 lakh hectares, while another 4.44 lakh hectares had been covered during the 2026 kharif season. The government has also sanctioned 60 seed hubs and 50 specialised seed storage units.
Oilseed production rose from 413.55 lakh tonnes in 2022-23 to 430.59 lakh tonnes in 2025-26. Domestic edible oil availability increased from 124.23 lakh tonnes in 2022-23 to 126.30 lakh tonnes in 2024-25, while imports declined from 165 lakh tonnes to 160.72 lakh tonnes.
Under the pulses mission, farmers receive support for improved seeds, climate-resilient varieties, crop demonstrations, training, seed kits and post-harvest facilities. In 2025-26, demonstrations covered 4.79 lakh hectares, while 3.10 lakh quintals of certified seeds and 9.25 lakh seed kits were distributed.
Pulse production increased from 242.46 lakh tonnes in 2023-24 to 274.09 lakh tonnes in 2025-26. Imports also fell from 72.56 lakh tonnes in 2024-25 to 59.64 lakh tonnes in 2025-26. Under PM-AASHA, NAFED and NCCF are supporting assured procurement of Tur, Urad and Masoor from registered farmers.
