Haryana Extends Rice Bonus Deadline, Reassures Millers on Storage and CMR Delivery
In a move that has brought relief to the state’s rice milling industry, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini declared that the incentive bonus for millers will now remain valid until June 30, 2025. The announcement came during a high-level meeting with office-bearers of the Rice Millers Association at Haryana Niwas, called specifically to take stock of pending concerns around Custom Milled Rice (CMR) supply, godown space, and other logistical hurdles plaguing the trade.
Millers present at the gathering flagged a pressing worry the Centre’s refusal to accept extra rice stock beyond the sanctioned limit and appealed to the Chief Minister to intervene directly with New Delhi. Saini clarified that the Union Government had set a procurement ceiling of 55 lakh metric tonnes for Haryana this season, but an unexpectedly bumper paddy harvest had pushed output well past that figure. Calling this a positive sign for farmers, he revealed that he had already flagged the matter in writing to central authorities and would be raising it in person during talks scheduled the very next day. “The government will not leave millers to fend for themselves,” he assured the gathering, promising full backing on every pending grievance.
On the bonus front, association members pointed out that payouts for the 2024-25 season had so far covered only rice supplied up to March 15, and pressed for the window to be widened. The Chief Minister agreed, noting that while the scheme was originally meant strictly for deliveries within the earlier cutoff, the government had chosen to relax the norm given the practical difficulties millers were up against. The association responded with words of thanks for the gesture.
Storage constraints also dominated the discussion, with millers seeking more warehousing capacity across the state. Saini responded by revealing that instructions had already gone out to concerned departments to ramp up storage infrastructure, and that groundwork for new large-scale warehouses and modern silos was already underway a step he said would put an end to the storage crunch for good.
The meeting saw participation from top bureaucrats including Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi, Principal Secretary Arun Gupta, Food & Civil Supplies officials J. Ganeshan and Anshaj Singh, Agriculture Department chief Raj Narayan Kaushik, along with Dr. Shaleen of the Warehousing Corporation, HAFED’s Anish Yadav, and rice millers representing districts from across Haryana.
