Groundnut sowing picks up pace by nearly 9 percent this kharif season
Farmers across central and northern India have pushed groundnut acreage up by nearly 9 percent this kharif season, with sown area reaching 46.82 lakh hectares as of August 7, compared with 43.11 lakh hectares at the same point last year. Widespread monsoon rainfall through the region has given growers the confidence to expand cultivation.
Steady prices heading into the sowing window, along with last season’s government purchases at minimum support price, have also played a part in encouraging farmers to put more land under the crop.
The gains have come largely from Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, where farmers have ramped up plantings enough to offset a slowdown elsewhere. Gujarat, which grows more groundnut than any other state, is currently running more than 3 percent behind last year’s pace, and Karnataka has seen sowing held back by patchy rainfall but the shortfall in these two states hasn’t been enough to drag down the national numbers.
