Telangana Seeks 100% Procurement Cover for Pulses and Oilseeds
The Telangana Government has urged the Centre to expand procurement support for pulses, maize, jowar and oilseeds to give farmers greater price assurance and encourage crop diversification. Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao raised the demand during a meeting with Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in Delhi on Wednesday. Telangana has specifically sought an increase in the existing procurement limit for pulses and oilseeds from 25 per cent to 100 per cent.
The State government believes wider procurement would provide farmers with greater market security and help ensure remunerative returns. It also sees stronger procurement support as a way to build confidence among farmers and encourage them to diversify their cropping patterns. During the meeting, the Centre assured Telangana that pulses would be procured. The issues concerning jowar and maize are also expected to be taken up with the ministers concerned. Telangana has also sought a minimum guaranteed price of ₹25,000 per tonne for fresh fruit bunches (FFBs) from oil palm cultivation. The State wants the proposed price support to make oil palm more attractive to farmers and encourage greater cultivation of the edible oil crop.
Along with price support, Telangana has proposed the establishment of a Regional Oil Palm Research Centre in the State. The government is promoting oil palm cultivation on a larger scale and believes a dedicated research centre would support the development of the crop in the region. The State has further requested the Centre to expedite the comprehensive Seed Act and incorporate the suggestions put forward by the Telangana Government. The demands underline Telangana’s push for stronger procurement mechanisms, improved price support and greater institutional backing for alternative crops. Raising procurement coverage for pulses and oilseeds, along with measures to support maize, jowar and oil palm, remains central to the State’s efforts to provide farmers with greater market assurance and promote crop diversification.
