Ukraine assigns more acreage to oil seeds

According to a report from the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), Ukrainian planters are expected to plant more oilseeds, with the exception of sunflowers, but the production volumes in 2024-25 could decline on lower yields.
The soybean production area is estimated at 2.1 million hectare, an 18 percent increase, and rapeseed area is estimated at 1.5 million hectare, a 7 percent increase. Sunflower seeds production area to remain the same at 5 million hectare.
Sunflower seed production is estimated at 11.5 million tonne (mt), a decrease of 4 percent from 2023-24 while soybean production is estimated at 5.1 mt, a 7 percent increase, and rapeseed at 4 mt, similar to last season.
Ukraine, a major exporter of bulk agricultural commodities, depends on access to ports and sea routes, all of which have suffered since its conflicts with Russia in February 2022.
The most of its export is dedicated to grains, and oilseed exports fluctuate based on available export capacity, said the report.
The report also said that overall oilseed exports are expected to grow in 2024-25 due to larger soybean and rapeseed shipments. Exports are estimated at 300,000 tonne for sunflower seed, similar to last year, 2.9 mt for soybeans, a 7 percent increase, 3.6 mt for rapeseed, an increase of 22 percent.
The EU is expected to be the largest market for oilseeds.
