Tripura’s milk production sees a steady rise
As informed to the Assembly by Sudhangshu Das, Animal Resources Development Minister, Tripura’s milk production has witnessed a steady rise during the past 3 financial years, due to the state government intensifying efforts to achieve self-sufficiency in the dairy sector.
In response to inquiries from MLAs Nirmal Biswas and Sudip Roy Barman, the minister indicated that the state produced 230,115 tonne of milk during the 2022–23 period. This figure rose to 247,305 tonne in 2023–24 and further increased to 263,690 tonne in 2024–25.
Despite this growth, the current annual demand for milk in the state is 303,480 tonne, resulting in a production shortfall that the government intends to address through targeted measures.
To enhance production, the department has initiated several schemes, including artificial insemination programs, livestock nutrition and feed development projects, and specialized training for personnel engaged in breeding services. Additionally, the government is setting up “Gokul Gram” centers and providing high-yield crossbred calves to farmers.
As part of the Chief Minister’s Improved Cattle Project, sex-sorted semen is being utilized in artificial insemination to boost the birth rate of female calves, thus increasing milk production capacity. The application of superior genetic material is also contributing to the overall enhancement of livestock quality in the state.
Additionally, under the Chief Minister’s Animal Resources Development Yojana, balanced nutrition is being provided to calves. In the current financial year, around 8,000 calves have been brought under proper nutritional management. Farmers are also being trained in green fodder cultivation and scientific animal nutrition practices to improve productivity.
