Myanmar’s rice exports increase on strong demand

According to official sources from the Myanmar Rice Federation (MRF), Myanmar’s rice exports during the first 8 months of the current financial year 2025-2026, which commenced on April 1, have exceeded 1.78 million tonne (mt), valued at USD 575 million.
In April, Myanmar exported over 142,000 tonne ($52 million), followed by more than 250,000 tonne ($90 million) in May, 210,000 tonne ($71 million) in June, over 230,000 tonne ($77 million) in July, more than 190,000 tonne ($65 million) in August, and 160,000 tonne ($52 million) in September. Additionally, the country exported 310,000 tonne ($92 million) in October and 263,815 tonne ($76 million) in November, culminating in a total of 1.787 mt valued at approximately USD 575 million.
In the financial year 2024-2025, from April 1 to March 31, Myanmar earned over USD 1.129 billion from the export of 2.48 mt of rice and broken rice.
In the last 7 months, Myanmar exported over 1.5 mt of rice, generating USD 499 million, with a significant portion going to China (exceeding 340,000 tonne). According to data from the Myanmar Rice Federation, in November, Myanmar exported 81,441 tonne of rice and 3,493 tonne of parboiled rice to China.
The MRF stated that 7,500 tonne of Aemahta rice, 5 percent broken, produced from Ayeyawady Region will be exported to Bangladesh under the Government-to-Government agreement. A total of 2,500 tonne will be shipped under the first batch. The rice will be sent to Bangladesh by sea only. According to the Memorandum of Understanding on rice trade between Myanmar and Bangladesh, 31 companies are allowed to convey rice to Bangladesh. A total of 7,500 tonne of rice will be exported to Bangladesh through Pathein Port.
Notably, Myanmar predominantly depends on maritime trade for its rice exports. The federation has set a target of 3 mt of rice exports for the current fiscal year.
