Kazakhstan’s lentil exports nearing a historic high record
According to trade analysts, with production soaring to 842,000 tonne in the 2025-26 marketing year (MY), Kazakhstan is strengthening its role as a leading global exporter of lentils. Although plantings in 2026 may decrease due to abundant global supplies, investments in processing, and government-supported financing are actively fostering long-term productivity and export expansion.
As reported by the Grain Union of Kazakhstan, the country’s lentil exports have risen 1.5 times compared to the previous year during the initial five months of the 2025-26 marketing year, nearing a historic high record. Total shipments have reached 315,300 tonne, almost equaling the full-year record from the previous season.
Simultaneously, exports in January fell to 13,500 tonne, representing a 58 percent decrease from December, which indicates seasonal variations in trade patterns. Nevertheless, the overall trend continues to be favorable, bolstered by robust external demand. Turkey continues to be the primary importer of Kazakh lentils, raising its acquisitions by over 2.6 times to 291,200 tonne. Its proportion of total exports has now reached 92 percent, underscoring its leading role among purchasers
Grain Union data shows that additional shipments were sent to Afghanistan (4,200 tonne), Azerbaijan (2,000 tonne), and Kyrgyzstan (1,300 tonne), although the volumes for these destinations have decreased compared to the previous year. Smaller amounts were also exported to countries in Europe, the Middle East, and Central Asia, as well as to China, where shipments increased to 7,600 tonne from just 1,000 tons in the last season.
Trade analysts estimate that Kazakhstan’s lentil exports may reach 440,000 tonne in the 2025-26 marketing year, establishing a new all-time high. Despite a downward adjustment of 30,000 tonne, the overall volumes continue to be historically elevated due to persistent global demand.
