Indian cotton meets higher sowing for season next
According to the Agriculture Ministry data, the sowing of cotton for the season ahead, was well to expectations progressing in the key producing States. Till July 7, the fibre crop had been sown on around 79.54 lakh hectare (lh) of cotton, sowing space marginally higher than 78.58 lh a year ago.
The trade body, the Cotton Association of India (CAI), estimated the closing stocks of cotton in the country, for the current 2024-25 season ending September, to remain around 55.59 lakh bale (of 170 kg each), about 84 percent higher than the previous year’s 30.19 lakh bale.
The cotton pressing numbers for the 2024-25 season are estimated at 311.40 lakh bale, higher than its previous estimate of 301.14 lakh bale on higher crop size, the CAI President, Atul Ganatra said in a statement.
He attributed the increase to the higher than estimated pressing of the cotton crop in Maharashtra, that remained 5 lakh bale. Gujarat and Telangana, other important states, pressed the raw cotton as 1.5 lakh bale each with 1 lakh bale in Karnataka. Andhra Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan have also witnessed a marginal increase in pressing numbers on improved crop arrivals.
The trade body estimated the total cotton supply till end June at 356.76 lakh bale, consisting of pressings of 296.57 lakh bale, imports of 30 lakh bale and opening stock of 30.19 lakh bale. The consumption till end-June stood at 233.5 lakh bale, while exports were estimated at 15.25 lakh bale. Stocks at the end of June 2025 was estimated at 108.01 lakh bale, including 32.00 lakh bale with textile mills and the remaining 76.01 lakh bale with CCI, Maharashtra Federation and others (MNCs, traders, ginners, exporters, etc) including cotton sold but not delivered.
CAI estimated the total cotton supply, till end of the cotton season 2024-25, at 380.59 lakh bale against the earlier projection of 370.34 lakh bale on higher production in some States. The domestic consumption for the season is seen marginally higher at 308 lakh bale against the earlier projection of 305 lakh bale. The exports were projected at 17 lakh bale. Notably, the exports were seen lower by 40 percent this season as against the last year’s 28.36 lakh bale.
The imports of cotton, for 2024-25, are pegged at 39 lakh bale, more than double the previous year’s estimates of 15.2 lakh bale. Till June end, about 30 lakh bale were estimated to have arrived at the Indian ports, CAI said.
