Canada to harvest more dry peas-lentils in 2025-26

According to the reports from Canada’s agri-sector, the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) raised its 2025-26 production estimates for dry peas and lentils from its July report. In its August report, the AAFC adjusted exports, domestic usage and ending stocks.
The latest revisions for Canada’s two main pulse crops, the dry peas and lentils came ahead of the Statistics Canada crop production report that was scheduled for August 28. Both the federal agencies use the satellite imagery and models to reach their forecasts.
The AAFC, raising its August projection for Canada’s dry peas by 300,000 tonne brought it to 3.50 million tonne. As compared to last year, the country’s dry peas crop is expected to rise by 503,000 tonne than 2024-25. That’s based on area harvested increasing by 109,000 hectare and yields increased to 2.52 tonne per hectare from last year’s 2.34 tonne per hectare.
The dry pea exports were projected increased by 100,000 tonne raising present export volume as 2.10 million tonne, a little short of 2.20 million tonne in 2024-25. AAFC projected domestic consumption for 2025-26 remaining as 670,000 tonne, which is 58,000 tonne more than last year. The estimate translates into higher ending stocks of dry peas at 1.275 million tonne versus 975,000 tonne projected last month. The projections are there for a much larger carryover than the 2024-25 which was marked as 525,000 tonne.
For lentils, Canada’s number two pulse crop, the AAFC projected its production as 2.60 million tonne this year, raised by 150,000 tonne than year last. The harvested area is increased by 57,000 hectare to 1.75 million and yields increased to 1.49 tonne per hectare.
The lentil exports were projected as 2.10 million tonne for 2025-26, about 200,000 tonne more than 2024-25. Domestic use remained projected at 300,000 tonne, slightly lower than 316,000 tonne, a year ago.
The ending stocks for lentils were increased to 780,000 tonne from 530,000, the AAFC estimated in July. The latest figure for the same is significantly higher than 505,000 tonne of 2024-25.
