Turmeric Gains Ground as Karnataka Drought Fuels Supply Concerns
Turmeric prices climbed sharply, with the benchmark contract settling 3.72% higher at ₹22,290, as drought-related crop losses in Karnataka heightened concerns over production and tightening supplies.
A joint assessment by the Karnataka State Departments of Horticulture and Revenue, along with the Karnataka State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA), estimated turmeric crop damage at 13,446 hectares, valued at ₹18,824 lakh. The affected area represents a significant share of the state’s total turmeric acreage of around 18,000–20,000 hectares.
The market has also been supported by lower carryover stocks. Inventories are estimated at about 15 lakh bags, down from more than 20 lakh bags a year earlier, reducing the cushion available to absorb any production shortfall. Concerns over inadequate rainfall during the crop’s early growth phase, potential El Nino effects and limited expansion in sowing across major producing regions have further strengthened the bullish sentiment.
Still, improved monsoon activity in Maharashtra, Telangana and North Karnataka has reduced fears of widespread crop damage. Reservoir levels in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have also improved, while re-sowing in North Karnataka has been completed following rainfall, with crop conditions showing signs of recovery.
Export-market developments remain mixed. Tighter European Union maximum residue limit requirements are weighing on non-IPM-compliant lots, while demand for IPM-certified turmeric continues to support compliant stocks. Increased farmer selling during the peak harvesting period has added some pressure, although stockists remain active but cautious.
India’s turmeric exports fell 10% year-on-year to 13,489 tonnes in July 2026. However, cumulative exports for April-July rose 4% to 65,476 tonnes, helped by stronger shipments to Turkey, Sri Lanka and Nigeria. In the spot market, Nizamabad turmeric closed 2.6% higher at ₹21,267.8.
Technical Outlook
The turmeric market is showing signs of short covering, with open interest declining 2.4% to 37,640 contracts as prices rose ₹800. Immediate support is seen at ₹21,742, with a break below this level potentially dragging prices towards ₹21,196. On the higher side, ₹22,742 is the key resistance level; a sustained move above it could open the way towards ₹23,196.
