Oilseed Prices Stay Firm, but Soybean Faces Near-Term Pressure
India’s oilseed market is entering an interesting phase. Prices remain comfortably above their support levels, but the latest mandi trends suggest that the strong rally seen in some commodities may be losing momentum in the near term.
Soybean remains the standout performer. Average mandi prices reached Rs 6,336.33 per quintal on August 18, nearly 40% above the year-ago level. However, the picture has changed over the shorter term, with prices falling more than 4% in a week and nearly 12% over the month. This correction could continue if fresh arrivals improve and buying remains cautious, although the wider price trend remains firm.
Groundnut is showing greater stability. Prices stood at Rs 7,501.06 per quintal, gaining slightly during the week and more than 6% over the month. With prices almost 29% higher than a year ago, the commodity continues to retain strong market support.
Mustard, at Rs 7,451.44 per quintal, has also maintained a positive yearly trend despite a weekly decline. Its relatively steady monthly movement suggests that the market could remain range-bound unless fresh supply or demand brings a stronger trigger.
Sesamum presents a different picture. Although prices recovered marginally during the week, they remained nearly 5% below the previous month’s level. At Rs 11,890.59 per quintal, it continues to command the highest price among the major oilseeds tracked.
Sunflower has been comparatively steady, with prices moving higher both weekly and monthly.
Looking ahead, soybean is likely to remain the key market to watch. The next few weeks could bring greater volatility as supply expectations, arrivals and demand begin influencing prices. Groundnut and mustard may remain relatively firm, while sesamum could face pressure if demand does not strengthen.
For the oilseed sector, the immediate outlook therefore appears firm but uneven, with prices supported at present but the possibility of further corrections in commodities that have already posted sizeable annual gains.
