Oilmeal Trade Eyes Recovery as Rapeseed Meal Leads 18.4% May Growth
India’s oilmeal export market may be heading towards a gradual recovery, with rapeseed meal emerging as the strongest performer and Asian demand providing a much-needed lift to shipments.
Oilmeal exports rose 18.41% year-on-year to 3.73 lakh tonnes (lt) in May 2026, compared with 3.15 lt in the same month last year. The improvement was largely driven by rapeseed meal, whose exports jumped to 2.47 lt from 1.34 lt.
Despite the strong May performance, the first two months of 2026-27 remain weaker than last year. Total oilmeal exports stood at 7.39 lt during April-May, down 5.37% from 7.81 lt. A sharp fall in soybean meal shipments was the biggest drag.
Rapeseed meal, meanwhile, is likely to remain the key growth segment in the near term. Exports during April-May reached 4.95 lt, against 3.47 lt a year earlier. China has emerged as an important market, taking 2.73 lt of rapeseed meal during the period.
The export outlook for soybean meal remains more challenging. Shipments fell to 1.44 lt from 3.87 lt a year earlier as higher Indian prices reduced its competitiveness against supplies from Argentina, Brazil and Europe.
Freight costs and shipping disruptions could continue to influence export flows, although any easing in logistics pressure would improve India’s position in overseas markets.
Domestic oilseed availability will also shape the market ahead. Soybean acreage was slightly lower at 121 lakh hectares as of August 14, while groundnut acreage rose to 48.03 lakh hectares. Weather during the remainder of the crop season will be crucial for determining production and exportable supplies.
With China, Bangladesh and Vietnam continuing to absorb Indian oilmeals, the market could gain further momentum if rapeseed meal demand remains firm. For exporters, the next few months will largely depend on global prices, freight rates, crop prospects and India’s ability to remain competitive in Asian markets.
