Agriculture as a crucial pillar for sustained growth

The Prime Minister Modi emphasized that agriculture continues to be a vital component of India’s long-term development strategy, and urged for an increase in high-value farming and the enhancement of quality and branding of agricultural products.
During the third post-Budget webinar focused on agriculture and the rural economy, the Prime Minister stated that the government has implemented numerous measures to fortify the sector and mitigate risks for farmers, and mentioned that nearly 10 crore farmers have benefited from over Rs 4 lakh crore through the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme, noting that various reforms and welfare initiatives have contributed to providing essential economic security for farmers.
“Many such initiatives have considerably diminished the risks faced by farmers and bolstered the confidence within the agricultural sector,” Modi remarked, highlighting that the nation is witnessing substantial production levels of food grains, pulses, and oilseeds.
The Prime Minister also underscored the importance of making Indian agriculture more export-oriented in response to evolving global demand. “International markets are becoming more accessible, and global demand is shifting. We must fully leverage our diverse agro-climatic zones,” the Prime Minister stated.
Emphasizing the significance of technology in agriculture, Modi noted that the government is enhancing digital public infrastructure for the sector, which includes the establishment of farmer digital identities or Kisan IDs. Approximately 90 million such IDs have already been created, and digital surveys of around 300 million land parcels have been finalized, he added.
Platforms like eNAM are facilitating equitable market access for farmers, while AI-driven initiatives such as Bharat Vistaar are aiding in closing the gap between research institutions and farmers, the Prime Minister further explained.
