Sunflower production in Kazakhstan forecast to nearly double in 2024-25
According to a report by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), Kazakhstan’s sunflower production in 2024-25 is expected to almost double compare to the previous year.
The USDA report said that the country’s sunflower production is forecast at 1.8 million tonne (mt), which is 75 percent up on the five-year average.
The yields are estimated at 1.46 tonne per hactare, a rise of 33 percent compared to the previous year and 32 percent up on the five-year average. The total harvested area is estimated at 1.3 mega hactare, an increase of 11 percent compared to the previous year and 33 percent up on the five-year average.
The bumper crop is a result of the significant increase in planted area this season combined with substantially higher-than-normal yields. Overall, favourable seasonal weather and an abundance of soil moisture reserves provided optimal growing conditions across all oilseed growing regions, the USDA said.
As per the USDA’s report, additionally, the overall growth in Kazakhstan’s sunflower production in the last decade was driven by more efficient use of modern technologies, access to improved seed varieties, favourable domestic prices and better market opportunities for the crop.
On the other hand, according to annual agricultural statistics published by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the country’s Sunflower planted area; production and yield are all forecast at record levels for 2024-25.
