Record paddy purchase in Telangana
In the Vanakalam season of 2022-23, Telangana government has procured a record 64.30 lakh tonnes of paddy worth Rs.13, 750 crore. It is bought from 9.76 lakh farmers.
Civil Supplies Minister G Kamalakar said, “The season of paddy procurement started from the 21th of October last year and has been successfully completed in almost three months. If there is left any stock with farmers, it will also be purchased soon.”
He further said “Because of the state government’s agriculture-friendly measures, the purchase of paddy is now close to register a steady growth on yearly. Since the purchase started, all the measures were taken up to ensure to give more to farmers. Considering the difficulties faced by farmers from remote areas in transporting their stocks, the purchase centres were installed in their surrounding areas.”
“This season, more than 7000 purchase centres were commenced and approximately 9.76 lakh farmers sold their paddy at these centres. In lieu of this, about 12,700 crore has been deposited into the farmers account and the balance will be credited in next few days. During the purchase process, there was any shortage of gunny bags because 16 crore bags were arranged well in advance. Apart from this, another 5.5 crore bags have also been arranged to meet any further needs,” the minister said.
Appealing to the farmers to make good use of the opportunity, he further said that those farmers who have taken up harvesting a bit late during the Vanakalam season can sell their stocks till next few days; however most of the farmers had started their sowing in the Yasangi season. This season, the paddy purchase has increased to cross 64 lakh tonnes, while the figure was only 11.04 lakh tonnes in the Vanakalam season of 2014-15. In all the districts, the highest purchase of 5.86 lakh tonnes has done from Nizamabad district. After this district, about 4.75 lakh metric tonnes from Kamareddy and 4.13 lakh tonnes from Nalgonda have been purchased.
