Kharifsowing gets a head start: Agriculture Ministry
Kharif crop sowing has got a headstart as India has been receiving healthy monsoon rainfall this year. With the monsoon season in full swing, there has been satisfactory progress of sowing area coverage under Kharif crops. According to the Agriculture Ministry, rice has been sown in about 120.77 lakh hectare area as compared to 95.73 lakh hectare during the corresponding period of last year.Besides, about 64.25 lakh hectare area has been brought under sowing of pulses as compared to 24.49 lakh hectare during the corresponding period of last year. Oilseeds have been sown in over 139 lakh hectare area as compared to around 75 lakh hectare of last year.The coarse cereals has been sown in around 93 lakh hectare area and sugarcane has been sown in around 51 lakh hectare area.The area planted with cotton is at 10.5 million hectares up from 7.8 million hectares at the same time last year.While, sowing of oilseeds is at 13.9 million hectares, compared with 7.5 million hectares at the same time in 2019.Planting of pulses touched 6.4 million hectares, sharply higher than 2.4 million hectares in the previous year.
