India’s almond imports set rise 3pc in 2025-26

According to the US Department of Agriculture’s (UDSA’s) Post forecast, a 3 percent rise in India’s almond imports for marketing year (MY) 2025-26 started August this year, on increasing consumption. The Post said, the domestic production is projected to be lower because the adverse climatic conditions impacted the production.
The Post underlined that almond imports were set to rise to over 1.9 lakh tonne (shelled basis) from previous year’s 1.84 lakh tonne. Production is forecast lower at 4,100 tonne from previous year’s 4,150 tonnes due to climate disturbances in the top almond-producing states of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.
“Farmers face a complex set of interconnected soil and climate challenges each year, which negatively impact almond tree health and yields. Additionally, the absence of a centralized almond market, or ‘Mandi,’ in the region forces farmers to either store their produce or sell it in external markets, hurting their profits. Aging orchards, low yields, and climate disruptions are compelling farmers to shift away from almond cultivation in favour of more profitable, government-supported apple farming,” observed the Post.
The Post pegged the Indian almond consumption higher at over 1.95 lakh tonne from previous year’s 1.86 lakh tonne. Further, the Post has revised the MY 2024-2025 and MY 2023-2024 consumption estimates to over 1.86 lakh tonne and 1.84 lakh tonne, respectively, reflecting an expanding consumer base. The factors such as growing economy, rising incomes, the expansion of the middle-class and increasing awareness of health benefits are driving a consistent growth in consumption.
Considered a “superfood,” almonds are increasingly finding place in Indian dietary patterns, transitioning from traditional snacks to more nutritious alternatives and on-the-go options, particularly among the younger generations. The interest in health and wellness is increasing among India’s young population, half of whom are under 30, the Post said.
The almonds are well recognized for their nutrient-rich profile, including protein, fibre, vitamin E and antioxidants. E-commerce platforms are further boosting their accessibility, reaching consumers in good shape. India comes second in almond consumption after the US, said the Post.
