Canadian chickpea exports forecast 165 kt for 2024-25

According to the Statistics Canada (STC), chickpeas exports from Canada for 2024-25, are forecast at 165 thousand tonne (Kt). During the 2024-25, the US, the EU, and Turkey will remain as the top markets for Canadian chickpea.
The report shows that the carryout stocks are expected to rise significantly on larger supply and lower demand both for exports and domestic use. The average price is forecast to fall to lower due to weaker world demand and higher world supply.
On the other hand, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has estimated for US chickpea production to be at 256 Kt, 21 percent higher than 2023-2024, due to higher area but lower yields. Canadian chickpea exports to the US are forecast to be lower than last year at 30 Kt.
For 2025-26, the area seeded in Canada is forecast to decrease from 2024-25, largely due to lower potential returns compared to other crops. As a result, production is expected to fall sharply to 245 Kt. However, the supply is expected to rise from last year with larger carry-in stocks. Exports are expected to be higher than the previous year but carry-out stocks are expected to increase. The average price is forecast to be lower than the previous year.
